Mobile RDC: What About Security?

Bob Meara of Celent says mobile remote deposit capture service won't pose heightened threat of fraud.Remote deposit capture, or RDC, is automating check deposits at ATMs, homes and businesses via image scanners -- and now on mobile devices equipped with cameras.

But regardless of the remote channel used, the security risks and technology are the same for banking institutions, says Bob Meara, senior analyst for financial consultancy Celent.

During this exclusive interview, Meara says:

  • Chase's move to mobile RDC signals a tipping point for the technology;
  • Institutions interested in offering mobile RDC should plan thoroughly before jumping in;
  • Don't overlook multifactor authentication and risk mitigation.

Meara is a senior analyst in Celent's banking group, where his research focuses on check processing with emphasis on branch capture, remote deposit capture and deposit automation, as well as check conversion, image exchange and image replacement document solutions. Before joining Celent, Meara was the director of product marketing at Alogent, where launched a series of Check 21 payments solutions. Meara also worked as a senior consultant at Stonebridge Technologies, where he developed e-marketing, CRM and Internet branding strategies for his clients.
